USA Trip 2017 - Orlando

Next up Orlando! Home to the best theme parks in the world! This review will be quite a short one, mainly about the food I ate in Universal Studios. But boy was it great food!

Normally when you think of theme park food you think of boring burgers and fried food covered with some sauce but Universal Studios offers a whole lot more than that.

There are so many restaurants and food outlets at Universal Studios and that’s not even in the actual theme park. A lot restaurants can be accessed on the outside which is called Universal City Walk which is free to walk around and explore.

One place which I was really keen to visit was The Toothsome Chocolate Emporium and Savory Feast Kitchen. As soon as you enter Universal City Walk you won’t be able to miss Toothsome as it is one of the biggest structures in the area and reminded me of a giant chocolate factory.

The crazy shop at Toothsome
It has a cool steam punk theme where the waitresses and waiters dress up in old time clothes and there’s even a cool steam punk robot walking around the floor.

The restaurant has two levels with the bottom level being half a gift shop and half sit down restaurant. You can buy all sorts treats such as cotton candy, chocolate bars, souvenirs and cakes you can take away.

We had to wait around 25 minutes since it was lunch time but their messaging system which sent a text when our table was ready to our phone meant that we had time to explore the gift shop and walk around.

We sat down and were given the menus which was more like a story book it was so big! So many pages of food from burgers to crepes, to cocktails and wine.
Some dishes had a chocolate theme to them even the savoury ones. For example I ordered the chocolate stout beer which actually had hints of chocolate in it! Was a very pleasant drink to have and the bitterness of the beer mixed well with a hint of chocolate flavour in it.

For starters we ordered warm chocolate almond bread which was a great starter as it wasn’t too heavy and had pieces of choc chip in it making it a bit sweet and savoury at the same time.

For mains we ordered a tuna nicoise salad and a Tour de France burger which consisted of a beef patty, lettuce, tomatoes, sunny side up egg, avocado, crispy onions and French brie on a toasted brioche bun.

The burger was so tasty! So much flavour in the meat patty and very juicy. The egg was oozing out of the burger making it a sloppy but delicious mess to eat. It came with a side of kettle chips which were nice and crunchy. Definitely a filling burger with lots of flavour and fresh ingredients.

The salad was a much needed refreshing meal after almost a week and a half of eating fried, greasy, processed food. The tuna was lightly seared and crumbed on the outside and pink on the inside. The salad also came with a citrus vinaigrette which complemented the salad with a sour dressing.

We were quite full after the meal but we had come all this way to try some of their famous dessert so we decided to work our way through their cream puff and éclair sundae. My goodness it was intense! A giant cream puff pastry filled the bowl with small eclairs on the edge of it topped with strawberry, chocolate and vanilla ice-cream. The flavours were good but there was way too much whipped cream. In the end it became a mixture of melted ice-cream and whipped cream with soggy bits of pastry floating around. I’m sure there are better sundaes to choose from so I wouldn’t mind trying others if I ever get the chance.

Another notable food item at Universal Studios butterbeer! Straight out of Harry Potter land, this deliciously sweet (non-alcoholic) drink came as frozen or normal.

Frozen Butterbeer!
I chose frozen due to the extreme Summer heat and it was so delicious. It reminded me of a sweet frozen coke but with a bit of creaminess in it. The taste was similar to butterscotch candy and it really hit the spot.

There were much more food restaurants around the park but as we only spent 1 day there we could not try it all.

Overall, the food choices at Universal Studios were endless. No matter what you're in the mood for I am sure that Universal will have it.

USA Trip 2017 - New York City

This was my third visit to this amazing city and once again delivered something new to the table in terms of the delicious variety of food available. When one thinks of New York, the first thing that comes to mind is pizza! This is a city that definitely has no shortage of pizza restaurants and Rubirosa in my opinion is one of the best out there. Located in Nolita, this small pizza restaurant delivers thin, crispy pizzas with a variety of topping choices. We ended up choosing a sampler of bruschetta for starters and a large pizza (half classic half Rubirosa supreme). The sampler bruschetta was a trio of different types of bruschetta they had on offer. Each one packed with flavour but not over doing it at all. A mixture of your typical bruschetta with cherry tomatoes, basil, olive oil and garlic, a pesto bruschetta and a creamy cheese and honey bruschetta. Hawker - Sydney CBD

As you can tell I love my Malaysian food and Hawker does not disappoint. I’ve been to this place many times before but I recently won their monthly Instagram competition and was invited to a dinner for 2 for free! I immediately took up the offer and ate until my stomach reached full capacity. It’s a casual Malaysian restaurant located in the Sydney CBD. I often come here for lunch and because it is so spacious inside, there usually isn’t a long line. They seat you quickly and the menu, although not large, has quite a variety to choose from. Po Piah For starters we ordered the Po Piah, which is kind of like a Vietnamese rice paper roll filled with an assortment of fillings including Chinese sausage, shredded omelette, crispy shallots and chilli paste. It’s a typical Malaysian starter which is not found everywhere in Sydney and it has a light consistency to it so it doesn’t spoil your appetite. Oyster Omelette We also ordered the oyster omelette also known as Or Chien.
