USA Trip 2017 - New York City

This was my third visit to this amazing city and once again delivered something new to the table in terms of the delicious variety of food available.

When one thinks of New York, the first thing that comes to mind is pizza! This is a city that definitely has no shortage of pizza restaurants and Rubirosa in my opinion is one of the best out there.
Located in Nolita, this small pizza restaurant delivers thin, crispy pizzas with a variety of topping choices.

We ended up choosing a sampler of bruschetta for starters and a large pizza (half classic half Rubirosa supreme).

The sampler bruschetta was a trio of different types of bruschetta they had on offer. Each one packed with flavour but not over doing it at all. A mixture of your typical bruschetta with cherry tomatoes, basil, olive oil and garlic, a pesto bruschetta and a creamy cheese and honey bruschetta.

Sampler bruschetta
Onto the main course, the pizza! A beautiful circle of dough half covered in bright red sauce and cheese and the other half covered with mini meatballs, pepperoni, roasted garlic and mozzarella. It’s a thin crust pizza cooked to perfection. The slices were nice and crispy with the perfect amount of sauce as to not make the pizza soggy whilst cooking.

Delicious half and half pizza
For me I usually never order the classic tomato sauce and mozzarella but eating this one changed my appreciation for the simpler slices. The cheese mixed so well with the home made sauce and the ratio of dough to sauce to cheese was spot on. They also brought out small servings of chilli flakes, oregano and extra cheese to sprinkle on the pizza. The classic slice plus a little bit of chilli flakes was a winning combination.

Not to say the other half of the pizza was bad. Far from it! The supreme packed so much flavour from the meatball, pepperoni and garlic that it didn’t need any chilli or oregano flakes. From the photo you can instantly see that they place large chunks of mozzarella throughout the supreme side and when it comes out of the oven, it’s melted down like a crater of cheesey goodness.  By far one of the best pizzas I’ve ever eaten.

The waiter also told us that they make their own pasta and it’s just as good as the pizza however our stomachs had no more space for it unfortunately. Until next time Rubirosa!

Next up I’d like to talk about Russ and Daughters Café. We went for brunch one sunny Manhattan day to one of the most famous establishments in town.

Known for their smoked fish and bagels, we ordered two different breakfast boards to try out. One being the classic (smoked salmon, cream cheese, tomato, onion and capers) and the other being mensch (sturgeon, butter, tomato, onion and capers).

Smoked sturgeon breakfast board
Both were beautifully presented on a wooden board with slices of bagel with the sturgeon and pumpernickel with the salmon.

Smoked salmon breakfast board
It’s a breakfast where you can create your own meal by adding whatever you want to the bread and any additional toppings to whatever your taste buds desire. The smoked salmon and sturgeon were both delicious yet quite different in texture. The smoked salmon was thinly sliced and smooth like velvet whereas the sturgeon was much rougher texture and had a stronger taste.
The addition of the capers and raw onions went well with the saltiness of the smoked fish and was the perfect start to the day.

You can’t really walk around New York and not notice the abundance of bakeries and sweet treats on offer and Dominique Ansel Bakery serves some of the best not just in New York, but in the world.

Dominique Ansel is the inventor of the cronut and each month he serves a different flavour of the flaky, crispy treat. However he never repeats a flavour so if you go one month and try one, you quite possibly may never have it again.

Box of goodies
I went early to line up for the cronut (before 8am) and there was already a line of about 15 people deep. Not only that, but it was a Monday morning so to say these treats are popular is an understatement.

There were so many pastries and sweets on display but we were there for one thing. The flavour of the month was pineapple with a hint of basil and chocolate ganache on top.

The legendary cronut
We sat out the back of the tiny bakery and tucked into our cronut! The pineapple jam was in the centre amongst the layers of flaky pastry. Not too sweet and not too sour, it went well with the crispiness of the sugary cronut pastry. It was a reasonable size for a breakfast treat.

Speaking of sweet treats, another one on the list was Bibble and Sip. A tiny café near Broadway specialising in matcha cream puffs and matcha drinks.

The cream puffs come in a few flavours such as earl grey vanilla, white chocolate matcha pistachio and matcha white chocolate.

Matcha puff!
We chose the matcha white chocolate with an iced matcha latte. The cream puffs are definitely worth getting! A sweet, slightly crispy outer coating with a creamy, vanilla matcha centre. It wasn’t overly sweet which was a good thing and I could really taste the matcha in the cream and also in the pastry.
It paired well with the iced matcha latte and it’s the perfect mid afternoon snack tide you over until dinner time!

I chose these 4 places out of the many places I ate at because they were all foods that were either something I’ve never eaten before or were the best I’ve ever eaten.

New York is a place filled with every cuisine imaginable. As I said before this was my third visit and every time I go I uncover something new and exciting to eat.

What Would Lobi Eat? Pizza from Rubirosa and cronuts from Dominique Ansel Bakery.

Hawker - Sydney CBD

As you can tell I love my Malaysian food and Hawker does not disappoint. I’ve been to this place many times before but I recently won their monthly Instagram competition and was invited to a dinner for 2 for free! I immediately took up the offer and ate until my stomach reached full capacity. It’s a casual Malaysian restaurant located in the Sydney CBD. I often come here for lunch and because it is so spacious inside, there usually isn’t a long line. They seat you quickly and the menu, although not large, has quite a variety to choose from. Po Piah For starters we ordered the Po Piah, which is kind of like a Vietnamese rice paper roll filled with an assortment of fillings including Chinese sausage, shredded omelette, crispy shallots and chilli paste. It’s a typical Malaysian starter which is not found everywhere in Sydney and it has a light consistency to it so it doesn’t spoil your appetite. Oyster Omelette We also ordered the oyster omelette also known as Or Chien.

USA Trip 2017 - Orlando

Next up Orlando! Home to the best theme parks in the world! This review will be quite a short one, mainly about the food I ate in Universal Studios. But boy was it great food! Normally when you think of theme park food you think of boring burgers and fried food covered with some sauce but Universal Studios offers a whole lot more than that. There are so many restaurants and food outlets at Universal Studios and that’s not even in the actual theme park. A lot restaurants can be accessed on the outside which is called Universal City Walk which is free to walk around and explore. One place which I was really keen to visit was The Toothsome Chocolate Emporium and Savory Feast Kitchen. As soon as you enter Universal City Walk you won’t be able to miss Toothsome as it is one of the biggest structures in the area and reminded me of a giant chocolate factory. The crazy shop at Toothsome It has a cool steam punk theme where the waitresses and waiters dress up in old time clo
