Gojima is a place that does burgers but with a twist.
Instead of using the normal bread bun, they use a fried rice cake instead. Add
to this special sauce and a Japanese twist, and you’ve got yourself a Gojima
burger.
We arrived on a Tuesday evening around 6pm and we were able
to beat the crowd. The place has seats inside and a few outside, but you can
always get take away and eat it in the nearby food court.
We decided to get two burgers, 2 pieces of fried chicken, a
green tea “frozen custard” shake and an Asahi black beer. Yes they have Asahi
black! Probably the best beer in the world. Anyways back to the food.

Gojima! |
After much deliberation, we ordered the stack and the chicken burger. The stack was the
normal cheeseburger plus a crispy katsu mushroom in it. It comes with the usual
good stuff a burger should have such as tomatoes, onions, pickles, lettuce and
special sauce. The chicken was a crispy chicken fillet, cheese, tomatoes,
onions, pickles, lettuce and Gojima Miso sauce.

The stack was delicious. I’m glad I ordered the stack and
not just the regular cheeseburger as the katsu mushroom added a layer of
flavour and texture to it which worked well with all the ingredients. The rice
bun was crispy as they somehow fry it to hold the rice together. It’s all
nicely wrapped up in a sheet of seaweed and quite easy to hold. The flavours
worked well and the special sauce combined perfectly with the meat and
mushroom.

The chicken burger is pretty much the same thing with a
crispy chicken fillet instead of the beef patty/mushroom. However the Gojima
Miso sauce was quite different to the special sauce and added a bit of tang to
it all. Overall both were great burgers but I preferred the stack as it was a
bit more juicy and filling than the chicken.

A tip would be to eat the burger in one sitting and try not
to put it down. I found that once you start eating your way through it, it
begins to fall apart if placed down to say grab a drink of cold Asahi black.
The fried chicken was a little bit disappointing. Firstly
due to the price. It was $8.90 for 2 pieces and the pieces we received were a
drumstick and a chicken wing. Although tasty, I felt the price didn’t justify
the size of the chicken we got. Perhaps if we received a thigh or breast piece
along with a drumstick or chicken wing it may have saved the day, but on this
day I wasn’t so lucky.

The green tea frozen custard was a treat! Icy cold and
thicker than your average thick shake, it had a strong taste of matcha in it.
They offer it as a drink or as a scoop which is good for dessert lovers. The
longer we left it to melt though the sweetness of the drink started to come
through. Some people may prefer it this way but I preferred it as it started
out as. I guess the tip there is to get through it fast!
Overall I will be going back to try more of their juicy
burgers! Especially the miso salmon burger. It looks like a sushi burger! Delicious!
What Would Lobi Eat? The stack and an Asahi black beer to
wash it down.
