USA Trip 2017 - Miami

I’m in Miami Bi***!! Yes next stop was the beautiful city of Miami. We stayed right near the bustling South Beach and it was another city full of amazing food. We actually didn’t spend much time here so there are only two restaurants I’ll write about. First place is a very casual fish shop called La Camaronera near Little Havana. It’s half takeaway shop half sit down with table service. You can order raw fish to cook at home or cooked fish to eat in. We ordered conch fritters, camarones fritos (fried shrimp) and their famous fish sandwich. A conch is a mollusc and I would say it’s similar to a clam. They prepared it by rolling the conch into a rice ball and deep frying it and boy was it amazing! Crunchy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. I would compare it to an arancini ball but replace the cheese usually found in one with bits of conch. What made it better was that it was served with a delicious home-made tartar sauce. Slightly tangier than usual but worked...

USA Trip 2017 - New Orleans

Next up was the great city of New Orleans! A city known for jazz music, boozy Bourbon Street and of course, great food! Landing in the afternoon, we had to go see Bourbon street to see what all the fuss was about. The beginning of it was full of construction work as they were re-doing the road but further in you get a view of classic New Orleans with the French style balconies and bar after bar serving anything from cheap shots to frozen daiquiris. I’ll go ahead and do a quick review of the famous hand grenade from Tropical Isle. A drink which is synonymous with Bourbon Street, I just had to give it a go. The waitress asked if I wanted normal or frozen and it being such a hot day I opted for the frozen. At first taste it was like a pineapple slushie. Quite sour with a bit of sweetness and extremely cold. However this taste only lasts a few seconds as the alcohol hits you like a pile of bricks. I later read that there is grain alcohol mixed into the drink which is similar to moo...

USA Trip 2017 – Austin

Next stop Austin! Such a quirky and entertaining city! Free spirited hipsters roam wild and free on the streets and home to some of the best barbecue in the states! I’ll start off with the first barbecue spot Cooper’s BBQ Austin. One of the few joints that’s in the CBD of the city, it’s got a communal feel to it with long wooden share tables, a courtyard and even an upstairs section. Typical of barbecue joints, they charge meats by the pound and offer an assortment of sides including mac and cheese, coleslaw, grilled corn and pickles. However, at this place they also offer free refills of hot beans stewing in a pot to the side. For the meats I got an assortment of the good stuff which were beef ribs, half pound of brisket and jalapeno cheddar sausage with a side of pickles and grilled corn. They wrap the meats up in butchers paper and hand it all to you on a tray for you to devour it at a free spot on the tables. Brisket, jalapeno sausage, beef rib and corn ...

USA Trip 2017 - Dallas

Having recently returned from a holiday travelling the south and east side of the United States, I thought I’d blog about the different cities I visited and the awesome food I devoured along the way. First stop was Dallas! After a 16 and a half hour non-stop trip from Sydney, I was dying for a good feed when I landed. It was around dinner time by the time I checked into the hotel and freshened up and decided to explore Deep Ellum. Deep Ellum is a part of town known for casual eats, relaxed patios to drink on and a whole range of restaurants to suit your appetite. I had done my research on the best of Deep Ellum and decided to check out Cane Rosso, a pizza joint. We started off with charred brussel sprouts with pancetta, almonds and a balsamic reduction and 2 pizzas to follow. The brussel sprouts were cooked nicely with a bit of bitterness from the balsamic but saltiness from the pancetta. Charred brussel sprouts The pizzas were Cane Rosso (sausage, roasted onions ...

Gojima - The Star

Gojima is a place that does burgers but with a twist. Instead of using the normal bread bun, they use a fried rice cake instead. Add to this special sauce and a Japanese twist, and you’ve got yourself a Gojima burger. We arrived on a Tuesday evening around 6pm and we were able to beat the crowd. The place has seats inside and a few outside, but you can always get take away and eat it in the nearby food court. We decided to get two burgers, 2 pieces of fried chicken, a green tea “frozen custard” shake and an Asahi black beer. Yes they have Asahi black! Probably the best beer in the world. Anyways back to the food. Gojima! After much deliberation, we ordered the stack and the chicken burger. The stack was the normal cheeseburger plus a crispy katsu mushroom in it. It comes with the usual good stuff a burger should have such as tomatoes, onions, pickles, lettuce and special sauce. The chicken was a crispy chicken fillet, cheese, tomatoes, onions, pickles, lettuce and Gojima M...
